Static vs dynamic QR codes
Pick static if the content will never change. Pick dynamic if it might, or if you want to count scans.
The difference in one line
A static code holds your content. A dynamic code holds a short link to your content, which can be changed later.
Side by side
| Static | Dynamic | |
|---|---|---|
| Change it after printing | No | Yes |
| Scan stats | No | Yes |
| Works without the internet | For Wi-Fi, text and contacts | No, it needs the short link |
| Depends on the generator | No | Yes |
| Pattern density | Grows with the content | Small and easy to scan |
| SortedQR plan | Locked, $4.99 once | Editable, $7.99 once |
Choose static when
- The content is fixed, like a Wi-Fi password you never change
- You want it to work offline or without any company behind it
- You do not need to know how often it is scanned
Choose dynamic when
- A link, menu, phone number or offer might change
- You are printing a lot and a reprint would be expensive
- You want scan counts
Questions
Are dynamic QR codes free?
Usually only for a trial. Most generators then charge monthly. SortedQR charges once.
Can a static QR code be tracked?
No. It sends people straight to the content, so nothing is counted.
Can I turn a static code into a dynamic one?
No. You need a new code, and anything already printed keeps the old content.
