Do QR codes expire?

Short answer: the code itself never does, but the link inside it can.

Static codes never expire

A static QR code stores its content directly in the pattern: a web address, Wi-Fi details or a contact card. Nothing sits between the code and the phone, so it works for as long as the print lasts.

Dynamic codes can stop

A dynamic code stores a short link that belongs to the generator. When you scan it, their server forwards you to the real destination. If the free trial ends, the subscription lapses or the company closes, the forwarding stops and the code shows an error or an ad.

How to tell which one you have

  • Scan it and look at the address that appears before the page opens. A generator's domain means it is dynamic.
  • Check your email for the site you made it on, and whether it mentioned a trial or plan.
  • If it opens your own website directly, it is static and will not expire.

My QR code stopped working. What now?

  • If the generator switched it off, you can usually pay them to turn it back on, or reprint with a new code.
  • If the destination page moved, a dynamic code can be pointed at the new page. A static one has to be reprinted.
  • If it never scanned well, it may be printed too small, too low in contrast or on a shiny surface.

How SortedQR handles it

Paid SortedQR codes never expire. A Locked code is static, so it works even without us. An Editable code is dynamic but has no subscription to lapse. Only free QRs stop, 2 days after download, which is why we say not to print them. See QR codes that never expire.

Questions

How long does a QR code last?

A static code lasts as long as the print. A dynamic code lasts as long as the service behind it keeps the link on.

Why does my QR code say expired?

It is almost always a dynamic code from a generator whose trial or plan ended.

Can I fix an expired QR code without reprinting?

Only if the generator lets you reactivate the link. Otherwise you need a new code.

For your business card

Want people to save your number, not just scan it?
